Tiny Tars Foundation

About the Foundation

Tiny Tars Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to helping people chart a course for a successful and fulfilling future.

Where the name comes from

The term "Tiny Tars" is an affectionate, nautical nickname for young sailors just starting their journey on the water. We use it as a metaphor for people navigating the many challenges and adventures of life.

Just as a young sailor learns to handle a small dinghy in an unpredictable sea, we help the people we work with learn to navigate their own lives, adapting to challenges and seizing opportunities along the way. That is what our mission means in practice: equipping people with the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to become the captains of their own lives.

What we do

The Foundation runs two programs, described in full on ourprograms page.

Health literacy. LexiTar is a free health literacy utility, developed as a Digital Public Good and maintained by the Foundation. It translates the terminology in someone's own health record into plain language, maps their readings against a standard demographic reference range, and helps them write down the questions they want to ask at an appointment. It is educational, it gives no medical advice, and it charges nothing — which is structural rather than generous, because a price would move it out of the category it is built to sit in.

Youth development. Our youth work is organised around three pillars — Strengthening Bodies, Empowering Minds, and Nurturing Spirits — covering community wellness and active play, critical thinking and life skills mentorship, and empathy, perspective and mindfulness.

How we are funded, and what that commits us to

We are donor-supported. Nothing we run is sold, and nothing we run carries commercial advertising. We do not sell, rent, or monetize personal or health data, and ourprivacy policy states what we collect and why in detail. Ourterms of service andnon-discrimination statement apply to everything we do.
